About the event

Dr. Ryszard Bobrowski is a curator of numerous photographic exhibitions, both foreign and domestic. Among them, a special place is occupied by the groundbreaking exhibition “Polish Photography 1839—1979”. It was an undertaking on an unprecedented scale — both in terms of chronological scope, covering the period from the beginnings of Polish photography to the present day, as well as the thematic diversity of the works presented.

During the meeting at MuFo, our guest will present the ideas that guided the creation of the exhibition, the backstage of its preparation and the realization of the next installments in New York, Chicago and London, as well as Warsaw and Łódź. It will also invite opinions and discussions that accompanied the exhibition and the emotions it aroused in the photographic environment. The lecture will be accompanied by an extensive presentation of photographic materials from Ryszard Bobrowski's archive, among which there will be both documentation of individual works and the entire exhibition.

Conducting:

Ryszard Bobrowski, PhD — historian and art critic, curator of exhibitions and author of texts on art and photography. In the 1970s, he initiated and co-created the exhibition “Polish Photography 1839—1979”, which showed the history and importance of Polish photography to an international audience. It was presented in London, Paris, as well as New York and Chicago, and was recognized by The New York Times as the fourth of the top 10 photography exhibitions in the United States in 1979. Bobrowski was also the initiator and executor of numerous exhibitions of painting, graphics and posters in Poland and abroad. In the years 1985—1990 he was artistic director of the Gallery of Photography “Hybrydy” of the University of Warsaw (more than 30 exhibitions). He has published in Polish and international magazines, collaborated with publishers of encyclopedias and albums devoted to photography. In 1980 he received the prize of the Minister of Culture and Art for the presentation and promotion of Polish art abroad, and in 1987 — the ZPAF medal for merits for the development of Polish photography.
