Bach in the performance of a legend
One of the most important events of the 64th BFM will be the performance of the Freiburger Barockorchester — a band belonging to the absolute top performers of early music in the world. For more than three decades, Freiburg artists have set the standard for historical performance, regularly performing in the most important halls of Europe, America and Asia and collaborating with the most outstanding musicians of our time.
During the concert, the musicians will perform a set of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerts — a work considered one of the greatest monuments of Baroque music.
A masterpiece that has gone down in history
In 1721, Johann Sebastian Bach gave six concerts to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg. It is difficult to suppose that the composer could have predicted that three centuries later this cycle would be among the most performed and most admired works in the history of music.
Each of the Brandenburg Concerts has its own character, instrumentation and dramaturgy. With extraordinary imagination, Bach used the possibilities of individual instruments, creating music full of brilliance, energy, contrasts and masterful polyphony. Sometimes it impresses with its intimate subtlety, other times it impresses with its almost symphonic grandeur.
Freiburger Barockorchester — the world's leading early music brand
Founded in 1987, the orchestra has gained recognition from the beginning of its activity thanks to a fresh look at the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. Today the Freiburger Barockorchester is a regular guest of the most important festivals and concert halls in the world, such as the Philharmonie de Paris, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam or the Lincoln Center in New York.
The band has collaborated with such outstanding artists as René Jacobs, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Isabelle Faust, Andreas Staier and Philippe Jaroussky. His recordings have repeatedly won the most important international phonographic awards, and interpretations of Bach, Handel and Mozart's music are recognized as exemplary.
Bach in its purest form
Brandenburg concerts occupy a special place in the repertoire of the Freiburger Barockorchester. Musicians perform them on historical instruments, using knowledge of past performance practices, but at the same time avoiding the museum approach to music. Their interpretations are famous for their vivacity, precision and extraordinary musical communication between artists.
Thanks to this, the listeners have the opportunity to hear Bach's works in a sound similar to what they could have had in the 18th century, and at the same time full of freshness and emotional intensity.
A celebration of baroque music
The performance of all six Brandenburg Concerts in one evening is a special event. It is not only a meeting with one of the greatest masterpieces of European culture, but also an opportunity to hear him in the interpretation of a band that has for years set the world standards for the performance of Baroque music.
The Freiburger Barockorchester concert will be a true celebration of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and one of the most prestigious events of this year's Bydgoszcz Music Festival.
