In March 2026, NFM and CD Accord released the debut album by flautist Jan Krzeszowec, recorded with the accompaniment of pianist Tymoteusz Bies. In the ORLEN Main Hall, the musicians jointly recorded the works of Philippe Gaubert, Darius Milhaud, Gabriel Fauré and Pierre Sancan. It is time to listen to the extraordinary repertoire of the album live.
The first record release by Jan Krzeszowec — flutist of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic and LutosAir Quintet and an experienced pedagogue — focuses on the phenomenon of the French flute school. Hence the title of the album. Co-performer of the sonatas is Tymoteusz Bies, recognized as one of the most interesting pianists on the national scene. He feels equally well in the classical repertoire, as well as in the role of producer of hip-hop songs and composer of film music. During this concert, however, the artists will help us to see what this famous style of play, originating from Paris, consisted of.
Consolidating the royal status of metal instruments with Theobald Böhm's flap-mechanism and establishing the current aesthetics of sound to this day, the French flute school flourished at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. One of her most important characters was Philippe Gaubert. The Sonata, written by him in 1917, most boldly of the four works presented on that day, refers to the conventions of Impressionism. The next generation was Darius Milhaud, who in his composition five years younger focused on expressive, sometimes “entertaining” rhythms and sharp, modern dissonances. Gabriel Fauré's sonata — one of the fathers of French national music — was written for the violin. However, this elaborate romantic piece works great in a light and delicate flute robe. The evening will be crowned with the popular post-war Sonatina by Pierre Sancan — in comparison with its predecessors, the closest to the ideal of simplicity characteristic of neoclassicism.
