'The Birds' is a thriller with horror elements and represents some of the best Hitchcock has created in suspense, even without the use of underpinning music. Jetset woman Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) goes on a weekend trip to a California fishing village to seduce a local resident she's seen having a crush on. However, things develop in an unexpected and disturbing direction as apocalyptic flocks of birds go on the attack on the small community. The core of the story is taken from a Daphne Du Maurier short story to which Hitchcock had acquired the rights years back — and of which he was reminded via newspaper publicity of a series of episodes in which birds had behaved aggressively towards humans. The plot structure of 'The Birds' is often cited as a source of inspiration for Steven Spielberg's landmark 'The Gaping of Death' (1975).
