The film is among the most important and uncompromising pictures about the Vietnam War. Kubrick avoids the patriotic tone typical of classic war cinema. Instead of heroism, it shows dehumanization, violence and the psychological effects of war. The title “Full Metal Jacket” refers to a type of military ammunition, but symbolically it also means “armor” of the human psyche.
