Gaskačázis is a collaborative project by composer and musician Markus Thonhaugen (iDJa) and visual artist Eili Bråstad. The audience is invited on a meditative journey through a northern landscape of organic and technological forms of expression — to a place where sounds and images blend together.
Gaskačázis is a North Sami word and describes the space below the surface. The project explores the interface between nature, indigenous culture and modern technology. Using tools such as contact microphones and a microscope, recordings were made that give the audience insights into normally invisible and inaudible spaces. The improvised joik combines the various elements together.
Nature in Sápmi is facing major challenges due to human intervention. These leave behind irreversible changes in the landscape and its ecosystems. The project invites people to think about a changing world. Sound and visual elements react to each other in real time and create a constantly changing environment that focuses on presence, attention and sensitivity to change.
The project is supported by Sametinget in Norway, Arts Council Norway and Nordland Provincial Council.
Free with museum ticket.
