Julie (J.Binoche) loses her husband and daughter in a car accident. Numb with despair, she has to face the things left by her husband - a composition for a great European celebration and a mistress waiting for his baby. A woman decides to cut herself off from everything that would remind her of the past and tries to lead a life based on basic activities. However, the unfinished composition and the unborn child force her to get involved in the affairs of other people, also abandoned by her husband. Exploring the limits of freedom, she rebuilt human bonds through music and empathy. The first part of the triptych “Three Colors” by Krzysztof Kieślowski, created in scriptwriting collaboration with Krzysztof Piesiewicz and musical collaboration, with Zbigniew Preisner.
The films were made in a Polish-French co-production and turned out to be the last work of the director who decided to retire from the profession. “Blue” won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, where Sławomir Idziak's pictures were also awarded. Of the 6 nominations of the French Film Academy for Caesar, Jacques Witt won the award for editing. The theme of sudden widowhood, accident, exploration of the limits of freedom appeared already in Kieślowski's films from the period of moral anxiety, such as “Amateur”, “Endless”, “Accident”. In the French triptych, the title color directs the viewer's attention to European ideals of freedom, equality and fraternity, outside the Polish context. The main role was created by the star of European cinema, Juliette Binoche.
