How did Dea Trier Mørch (1941-2001) become one of the most important artists and writers of her generation? Why do her tales of motherhood and community still speak to us today? And what can a rediscovered writing like Mørch's tell us about both the past and the present?
With books such as' Kastaniealleen '(1974), 'White Lies' (1995) and' Winter Children '(1976), Dea Trier Mørch gave a rare insight into women's lives, political communities and the great upheavals that Danish welfare society underwent during her life.
'Winter Child' became Mørch's popular breakthrough when the novel sold over 100,000 copies and was subsequently made into a film in 1978. The novel depicts 18 women admitted to the maternity ward at Rigshospitalet in 1975. At the hospital, women's across social status meet and are entitled to the same care. Here an equal women's community arises until the women's men come to visit.
On the occasion of the resurgent 'Classics Day', the Main Library invites you to an evening about the life, art and literature of Dea Trier Mørch. It should be about why readers continue to seek out and discuss her works, and how she still influences the younger Danish writers of the time.
Hear author and journalist Pernille Ipsen, who is soon to present the first major biography of Dea Trier Mørch, tell about her and her extensive work investigating and writing about Mørch's life and work.
At the event, Pernille Ipsen will be in conversation with author Johanne Mygind about a writing that is both deeply rooted in its time and surprisingly present in our own.
