Jan Gregor Kremp presents a musical story of passion, scandal and reinvention

About the event

Pasión Tango — the story highlights Astor Piazzolla not only as the inventor of Tango Nuevo. The focus is on an artist full of anger, longing, rebellion and opposition: a man who hated, needed, fought and finally reinvented tango. Astor Piazzolla did not destroy tango — he freed it from its clichés, constraints and petty-bourgeois corsets.

The lyrics tell Piazzolla's life from changing perspectives: Amelita Baltar, his father Nonino, his wives Dedé Wolff and Laura Escalada, as well as companions remember the person behind the music. These voices create an image of an artist who rebelled against everything: against the expectations of his homeland, against the traditionalists, against the dance hall, against his own insecurity — and often against himself.

Piazzolla grew up between Buenos Aires and New York, between homesickness, a mafia district, street fighting and the bandoneon, which he initially rejected. His father gave it to him even though he would have preferred roller skates. It was precisely this instrument that later became his voice.
In Paris, Piazzolla tries to hide his true origins. He presents his classical compositions to Nadia Boulanger, wants to be Bartók, Stravinsky and Ravel — just not tango. But Boulanger immediately recognizes what is missing: “Where is Piazzolla? “It's only when he plays for her on the bandoneon that she finds the decisive sentence: “That's Astor Piazzolla. ”
Back in Buenos Aires, Piazzolla is fought as a traitor by the Tangueros. His Tango Nuevo brings jazz harmony, bow scraping, glissandi, percussion and new forms to the stage. For traditionalists, this is desecration. For Piazzolla, it is liberation. This struggle creates music between aggression and melancholy, dance and concert, origin and radical reinvention.
