About the event

Venue: DT Stage - “Wenn Liebe käme...”

Is that still the big hope? Romance has become a consumer good, successful relationships are laborious, and more and more people are looking for alternative relationship models. And yet: Love has a grip on our society. Who wouldn't want to be picked up in the arms of someone else? Gied, the long theatrical poem by British playwright Sarah Kane, reflects this desire for us. The piece exposes the inner world of desperate, highly romantic lovers. The voices of greed, they are looking for closeness, they want to put themselves under the pressure of one another. And yet their desire for security remains unfulfilled. How to address these voices?

Director Christopher Rüping transforms Kane's text into a theatrical experimental arrangement: While Maja Beckmann, Benjamin Lillie, Sasha Melroch and Steven Sowah speak the lyrics, we watch a fifth actress — Wiebke Mollenhauer — react to the text. What happens then? Perhaps we can reconnect with the drastic portrayals of violence that Sarah Kane became famous for in the 1990s. We may see ourselves, a society in therapy whose greed for recognition and affirmation seems insatiable. Or will the evening be able to keep the hungry voices in your head hanging over for a moment?

The production by Christopher Rüping, created at Schauspielhaus Zürich, has received numerous awards; Wiebke Mollenhauer was named Actress of the Year for her performance. From February, the evening of the theatre can be seen at the Deutsches Theater.
