The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams' breakthrough piece from 1944, which almost has the character of autofiction. The narrative is colored by the memory of his son Tom, and through his gaze the family story unfolds over a few intense and fateful days. Tom's mother, Amanda, lives through her children. She is stuck in the eternal dilemma between wanting to set them free and at the same time controlling their destiny. The daughter Laura is the opposite of her mother. She collects fragile glass figures and is a vulnerable person with an inner life that is opaque to her family. Amanda goes out of her way to get Laura into work independently or happily married, but Tom's pity for his sister locks her in a one-sided weak position. When Tom's friend Jim is invited to dinner and Amanda eyes him as a potential suitor for Laura, the illusions and glass house fall apart.
