Golden Eighties

The setting for GOLDEN EIGHTIES is a shopping center that was rebuilt in a studio based on the model of the “Toison d'Or” gallery in Brussels. Stylistically inspired by Technicolor musicals, Akerman tells of the love stories, aspirations and wishes of a number of women who go about their work in clothing stores, hair salons and cafés. In the brightly lit consumer paradise with brilliant displays and shop windows full of promises, everyone becomes spectators and performers at the same time, a stage that attracts everyone's attention. But the lightness of the pop production also includes other tones: A long-lost lover allows the pain of a Holocaust survivor and the melancholy of past love to emerge again.
