“My God and I lived in a specially arranged world where everything agreed,” says Pastor Tomas Ericsson, hero of the Guests of the Lord's Supper. That world, as well as the God in which he believed, is long gone, and he, remaining in a desolate reality, confronts the illusory nature of his old worldviews.
Next to the clergyman confronting his unbelief, there are three conformed twin figures. Martha Lundberg, an atheist experienced by a miracle from a God in whom she does not believe. Jonas Persson, a depressed man, terrified by the looming vision of nuclear war on the horizon. Algot Frövik — an ecclesiastical spinal disease sufferer who reads about Christ's Passion to overcome persistent insomnia.
The guests of the Lord's Supper is a story of people who contemplate an empty place after hope. Meditation on the condition suspended between the hope once present and the lack of it now felt. A story about the hopes compromised, lost. And about the possible ones that, however, remained unnoticed.
In the adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's screenplay, the four characters once again experience the events narrated in the film's original, in order to find, through an extended vivisection of the world and their place in it, what they did not notice at the time. It is a theatrical story that remains in relation to the original film - a journey through the scenes and landscapes written in it, which gives the opportunity to see the world and characters from multiple perspectives.
