The Goya documentary premiered at the last Cannes Film Festival. In the footsteps of the master, he uncovers before us the secrets of a genius who with pomp portrayed the restless spirit of his era. The secrets that combine the brutality and delicacy of the world, its splendor and misery; being a record of the inner struggles of images, are deciphered for us by the French screenwriter, writer and playwright Jean-Claude Carrière. “Everyone will find something here that will calm him or frighten him, surprise or comfort him,” he says of Goi's delightful painting.
Goya. In the footsteps of the master is a guide to the most important places for the painter (like the family home in tiny Fuendetodos), the key events of his life and the greatest works. Carrière brilliantly and with wit tells about Goa's love for painting women's feet, solves the riddle of mysterious gestures, explains how diseases and hearing loss introduced black into the master's canvases.
Carrière had been fascinated by Goa's painting for years and shared his admiration with another great Spaniard, Luis Buñuel, with whom he was friends and collaborators. The spirit of the latter constantly accompanies him on this journey. Registered in the document “Goya. In the footsteps of the master” expedition turned out to be a special one, since it was the last journey of Jean-Claude Carrière. The writer died before finishing work on the film, which thus became a tribute to him as well.
