Monodrama “Portrait of an Artist of Old Age” based on Thomas Bernhard's text “Minetti. Portrait of an artist from old age”

The monodrama “Portrait of an Artist from Old Age” is another form of confrontation between one of the most outstanding Polish actors — Jan Peszek — with the work of Austrian author — Thomas Bernhard. In recent years, the text “Minetti. Portrait of an Artist from Old Age” was in the repertoire of Warsaw's Polonia Theatre. At that time, on the stage of Polonia, Jan Peszek performed the main role, and the director of the play was Andrzej Domalik.

Presentation as part of the series “We play monodramas!” will be a real treat for lovers of theater and literature. It is the confession of an old, great artist, a story about his attitude towards the authors and the audience. It is a painful text, not attributed to any country and timeless.

The protagonist of the monodrama, created by Jan Peszek, is modeled after the outstanding German actor Bernhard Minetti, a friend and longtime collaborator of Thomas Bernhard, from whom the author makes a symbolic figure of the Actor.

NOTE: After the performance there will be a conversation with the actor, which will be led by Mateusz Nowak, curator of the series “We play monodramas!”

Jan Peszek — Polish film, theatre and television actor. Professor at the Stanisław Wyspiański Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow. He has been awarded many times for his artistic achievements, including the Alexander Zelwerowicz Award (1987). He became associated with the theatre of one actor thanks to Bogusław Schaeffer and his participation in the activities of the Kraków MW2 Ensemble. He made his debut in the monodrama with Schaeffer's text “Audiencja IV” (dir. Jan Peszek, 1965). In this poetics he also realized Peter Turini's “Finally the End” (directed by Zbigniew Brzoza, Teatr Studio, 1998), “Dospiewanie. Autobiography” (directed by Cezary Tomaszewski, 2014) and the cult, played continuously for 50 years — “Scenario for a non-existent but possible instrumental actor”.
