Grigory Sokolov

Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov's poetic interpretations come to life with mystical intensity.

He is regarded by pianophiles as one of today's greatest pianists, perhaps the greatest. He is universally admired for his visionary musical insight and spellbinding spontaneity, and his almost uncanny ability to articulate individual voices within a complex polyphonic texture and project seamless melodic lines with a minimal pedal use.

Unlike many pianists, Sokolov takes a great interest in the mechanism and setup of the instruments he plays. He spends hours exploring their physical attributes. “You need hours to understand a grand piano, because each one has its own personality and we play the concerto together,” he explains. The partnership between artist and instrument is essential.

Please note that you can also experience this concert the next day, Friday 23 October.
