Isao Takahata's “Tomb of Fireflies” is one of the most poignant war films ever made. Instead of big battles, it shows its consequences from the perspective of children - hunger, loneliness, helplessness and loss of hope. The delicate form here collides with a history full of pain and cruelty.

About the event

Cinema Discomfort is a new film series of Kinoteka dedicated to films that cross the boundaries of the emotional and psychological comfort of the viewer.

These are strong, bold and intense images that offer no easy distance or simple answers. They confront violence, trauma, alienation, loneliness or moral ambiguity, leaving anxiety, ambivalence and emotions that are difficult to sort out after the session.

The series is not based on the genre, but on the experience of the viewer. It undermines classical catharsis and offers no easy solution. It is a cinema that is worth seeing right in the cinema hall — on the big screen, in focus and without a safe distance.

FILM DESCRIPTION:

Japan, the end of World War II. After the death of her mother, the teenage Seita tries to take care of her younger sister Setsuko. Deprived of a home and the support of loved ones, the siblings begin a lonely struggle for survival in a war-torn country.
