“Halka” is undoubtedly one of the most popular and most frequently staged Polish operas. Its author is Stanisław Moniuszko, known as the Father of the Polish National Opera.
The libretto of the opera by Włodzimierz Wolski tells the story of the tragic love that came from Podhale Halka to the nobleman Janusz. A girl seduced by a gentleman becomes pregnant. Janusz, however, plans to marry Zosia, who comes from a rich and noble family. A broken Halka in despair throws herself into the current of the river.
Stanisław Moniuszko's work shows the class conflict and the moral drama of a girl who falls victim to a love deception.
An important aspect of the opera is its national character, obtained through the placement of the action in the Polish environment. Moniuszko masterfully contrasted two social groups here - noble singing is characterized by pomposity, while highlander singing is simple and sincere. The national sound also appears in the musical layer through the use of the rhythms of national dances — Polonaise and Masuria.
Stanisław Moniuszko's “Halka” is considered one of the most important operas in our country.
