Like no other figure in world literature, Hamlet became our national hero: “In Poland, the riddle of Hamlet is what is there to think about in Poland,” wrote Stanisław Wyspiański.
The shape of the stage interpretations of Hamlet can be decided by the details. But these will always be significant details. For example: does and in what form does the Spirit of the Father appear to Hamlet? What is true and what is false in the court of Elsinore? Do you believe in the spirits of ancestors? And do you believe anyone? Who manipulates, who seeks the truth, and who deludes himself that he is looking for it? And is anyone at all worthy of compassion?
“There are many issues in Hamlet: politics, violence and morality, a dispute about the unambiguity of theory and practice, about the ultimate goals and meaning of life, there is a tragedy of love, family, state, philosophical, eschatological and metaphysical. Anything you want! And there is still a shocking psychological study,” wrote Jan Kott, critic and essayist. One can endlessly multiply questions about all the senses of the tragedy created by Shakespeare, but in seeking the answer one must accept Kott's statement: “every Hamlet apart from the Hamlet of the philologists was and always is a modern man.”
Hamlet has faced many great actors in the past decades. However, it was quite rare for actors to start their careers with Hamlet. For Hugon Tarres, the title creation in a play directed by Jan Englert is the first at the National Theatre.
The play uses a reproduction of the Passage through Berezina by Januari Suchodolski (1859, oil on canvas, MNP Mp43) from the collection of the National Museum in Poznań.
