Hang Time is a choreographic meditation on hanging out and hanging out. Hanging in the air. To hold on. To hang by a thin thread. Braids hanging from the neck. Bodies floating in time. Lives that are interrelated and dependent on each other.
Drawing on soca and bouyon, seance, ritual and socializing, choreographer Malik Nashad Sharpe — under the alias Marikiscrycrycry — creates a charged world where dance, music and hauntings collide.
Drawing on black and Caribbean stories and lived experiences, Hang Time explores grief, mental health, and vulnerability in masculine communities. Cornrows and braids become symbols of protection and connection as the dancers carry each other, lose each other and squeeze their bodies through states of exhaustion, breakdown and endurance.
At its core, Hang Time asks what holds a community together in moments marked by vulnerability and loss -- and what's left when someone goes missing.
Malik Nashad Sharpe is a British-American choreographer and performance artist whose work finds itself at the intersection of dance, music, fashion and performance. Through an experimental and physically charged practice, Sharpe challenges conventional notions of choreography and expands the possibilities of movement as an artistic language.
Drawing on black and diasporic experiences, Sharpe explores themes such as identity, belonging, masculinity, power and vulnerability. Through sensuous and uncompromising works, Sharpe creates spaces for both critical reflection and bodily experience, where personal narratives meet broader social and cultural structures.
