With Hansel and Gretel, Engelbert Humperdinck succeeded in creating a fairytale opera that has captivated children and families time and again for over 100 years, not only in the run-up to Christmas. On the one hand, the exciting story about two children who get lost in the dark forest and are threatened by an evil witch, but who are finally able to defeat them with cunning and deceit has contributed to the work's continuing success. The combination of simple, catchy folk song melodies such as “Ein Männlein steht im Walde” with lavishly orchestral sound and great operatic voices is still extremely appealing to audiences of all ages. The production by Andreas Homoki tells the story in a straight line in poetic images, but does not dispense with theatrical scary effects or funny moments. With our bandmaster Anna Handler, a young dynamic conductor, is on the podium, who gives the performance her musical drive.
