Thursday BOUGHT TIME, opened a magazine, read Martenstein. A weekly ritual shared by a wide range of German readers. Harald Martenstein's columns are honest, pointed and highly subjective. Hardly anyone has the gift of thinking about everyday phenomena in a way that touches many people. Some of them feel understood. Another provokes.
Harald Martenstein stands by representing one of the most controversial population groups in our country right now: the old white man. Fortunately, he does not limit himself to this perspective; his success shows that he speaks for people from a wide range of backgrounds and contexts. His range of topics ranges from lovingly observed details to big politics.
Harald Martenstein has received numerous awards as a journalist, writer and columnist. The German Language Society awarded him the Media Prize for Language Criticism in 2023 on the accurate grounds that his wit was “critical, indiscriminate and provocative, but never hurtful. ”
The charismatic Henri Nannen Prize winner has published a number of books, the most recent of which is called “Es wird Nacht, Señorita. Thoughts about the delights of the present”. Martenstein was born in 1953 in Mainz and grew up there, today he lives in Berlin and in Gerswalde/Uckermark. Martenstein writes regularly for Welt am Sonntag and ZEIT.
