Helena Deland is a musician living in Montreal who is interested in how songs can express what eludes the language of everyday life.
She has already toured extensively across North America and Europe as opening act for Weyes Blood, Andy Shauf, Connan Mockasin, Soccer Mommy and Iggy Pop.
She released her debut album Someone New in 2020 on Luminelle Recordings. This was followed by the release of Hildegard, a joint album with Montreal musician Ouri. Their acclaimed second album Goodbye Summerland was released in October 2023. Deland's third solo album Eternity Shrugs (released on January 22, 2027 on Chivi Chivi) builds on the electronic density of Someone New and the sorrowful folk of Goodnight Summerland.
Eternity Shrugs was recorded in stages over four seasons in rural areas of Quebec and produced by Deland together with her long-time bandmates Francis Ledoux and Alexandre Larin, as well as musicians Lysandre Ménard and Cedric Martel, who have been part of the band for years. Piano, bass, organ, Rhodes, viola and woodwind instruments frame her voice and guitar in patient arrangements supported by finely structured percussion elements; her songs appear restrained one moment and subtly decorated the next. Deland imagines the album's color palette in shades of brown: wood, leather, smoke. The music is warm and lively, but never completely calms down.
Deland and her band are giving an exclusive German concert at Silent Green in February 2027.
