History of the Christmas Market in Wrocław | Rooted

The Wrocław Christmas Market attracts residents and tourists every year, becoming one of the most recognizable elements of pre-Christmas Wroclaw. However, few people know that its history goes back more than 400 years.

The history of the Wrocław Fair is a story about a centuries-old tradition that changed with the city and its inhabitants. Over the centuries, the fair experienced periods of prosperity, faced numerous adversities, was suspended and reorganized. At certain times it was also a model for other European cities.

However, the history of the fair is not only dates, documents, regulations and records in ancient books. This is primarily a story about the inhabitants of Wrocław, for whom pre-Christmas trade for hundreds of years was part of everyday life, preparations for Christmas and winter life of the city.

During the lecture we will learn about the history of the Christmas Market in Wrocław, but also the realities of subsequent eras and the ideas and customs that influenced its shape.
