Armies and soldiers in the field can be very good, but it was the strong Danish navy that made Denmark a northern European great power and power factor in the 16th and 18th centuries.
Søren Nørby tells about some of the most dramatic episodes from Denmark's 500-year naval history in its own waters and on the world's oceans. Among other things, we will hear about fierce battles with the Swedish navy, about the hunt for privateers in the West Indies and about submarines in serious difficulty.
Søren Nørby is a historian at the Department of Strategy and War Studies — and the Historical Consultant of the Navy. He has written numerous books on the history of the Navy. The lecture builds in particular on “Neither reckless nor timid” from 2020 and “With Necessary Boldness” from 2021.
The Practical History Club På Amager is run jointly by Kvarterhuset, Islands Brygge Bibliotek and Sundby Library.
We call ourselves a club, but everyone is welcome and the arrangements are publicly available.
