What if joy was our strongest form of resistance? What if we see dancing as an act of radical hope, not in spite of, but precisely because of, our exhaustion, our anger and our grief? In her performance “Hopepunk,” which premieres in December at Radialsystem, choreographer Julia B. Laperrière, four dancers and a musician explore the question of how increasing apathy, loneliness and fear can be met with sweat, rhythm and vulnerability: A choreographic manifesto that celebrates joy as resistance.
Bodies meet on stage that sweat, move in and against the beat, fail and search for connections again and again. Inspired by hybrid movement practices from club culture, groove and somatic approaches, a dynamic interplay between individual experience and joint action unfolds. “Hopepunk” sees dance as a shared resource and an embodied strategy for joyful protest and collective care. Hope thus becomes an active practice that can be practiced together.
“Hopepunk” will be shown in the Radialsystem rooms as part of the:LOVE: cooperation between Tanzfabrik Berlin and Radialsystem. With the “Radialsystem ♥ Dance Factory” initiative, the two institutions are cooperating to specifically improve the presentation conditions of dance makers.
