Agnieszka Smoczyńska returns with a new film to genre cinema with the energy, fantasy and audacity that have made “Daughters of Dancing” one of the most iconic Polish debuts of the 21st century.
“Hot Spot” is a futuristic sci-fi thriller set in the near future, where the social order is set by conscious artificial intelligence. A private detective investigates a murder and comes across a group of rebels capable of undermining the power of the digital system. The deeper he delves into the matter, the more he becomes convinced that in a world governed by algorithms, nothing is what it seems.
The international cast of “Hot Spot” included Andrzej Konopka (“LARP. Love, Trolls and Other Quests”, “Daughters of Dancing”), Noomi Rapace (“Girl with a Tattoo”, “Prometheus”) and Reika Kirishima (“Drive My Car”, “Norwegian Wood”).
Agnieszka Smoczyńska is one of the most original directors of contemporary European cinema — creator of the award-winning “Daughters of Dancing”, “Fugi” and “The Silent Twins”. “Hot Spot” will be another result of the collaboration of her unbridled imagination with Robert Bolesta's unique talent for telling original stories. His scripts, such as “The Last Family” or “Daughters of Dancing”, are among the most expressive phenomena in the panorama of contemporary Polish cinema.
“Hot Spot”, despite its international character, was mostly created thanks to the work in key production divisions of recognized specialists of the Polish film industry, who were responsible for key production divisions. The cinematographer is a longtime collaborator of the director Jakub Kijowski, editing — Beata Liszewska, sound — Marcin Lenarczyk. The music was composed by Marcin Macuk and Zuzanna Wrońska. Special effects were created in Poland under the supervision of Szymon Kani from PFX. Anna Anosowicz and Katarzyna Lewińska, authors of the scenography and costumes, are also responsible for the visual layer of the film.
The world premiere of “Hot Spot” took place at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada, where the film won a Special Jury Award. Organized since 1996 in Montreal, the festival is one of the most important and prestigious events in the world dedicated to genre cinema, with a special focus on horror, science fiction and fantasy. It was here that Bong Joon-ho, Guillermo del Toro and Park Chan-wook presented their films, among others.
In Poland, “Hot Spot” will first visit the New Horizons International Film Festival and the Dwa Brzegi Film and Art Festival, and will then be presented in the Main Competition of the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia, to be widely distributed on September 25.
