DE

Based on the life of painter Pan Yuliang, A SOUL HAUNTED BY PAINTING tells of a woman who stands up against social attributions and seeks her own path as an artist. This takes her from China to France, where she lives and works for many years and struggles for a place in an initially foreign art world.

Huang Shuqin is less interested in the classic artist biography than in the question of how a woman can gain control over her own image, work, and life. With Gong Li in the lead role and Zhang Yimou as executive producer, the film combines Chinese modernity, the European art world and female emancipation.

EN

Based on the life of painter Pan Yuliang, A SOUL HAUNTED BY PAINTING follows a woman who resists the roles assigned to her by society and searches for her own path as an artist. Her journey takes her from China to France, where she lives and works for many years while finding her place within an initially unfamiliar art world.

Rather than presenting a conventional artist biopic, Huang Shuqin asks how a woman can gain control over her own image, her work and her life. Starring Gong Li, with Zhang Yimou as executive producer, the film brings together Chinese modernity, the European art world and a story of female artistic independence.
