Faith, Doubt and Astonishing People with Hudson Freeman at Ideal Bar

Hudson Freeman is at full speed forward. The Brooklyn-based lo-fi folk songwriter has had his breakthrough in the past year with “If You Know Me” — a hypnotic blend of folk, bedroom pop, slowcore and post-emo, borne out by a simple and catchy guitar riff.

The demo went viral, and the song quickly sent Freeman out to a much larger audience, which has helped set the course for his further journey.

Freeman's music is hard to put in one box. Drawing inspiration from Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and Pedro the Lion, among others, Hudson Freeman has his songs revolving around faith, belonging, identity and the modern sense of being connected to everyone -- and at the same time standing alone.

On his 2025 album Is a Folk Artist, he translates those themes into a distinctive and intimate folk universe where lo-fi aesthetics meet big melodies and personal narratives. And the road to this has been quite unusual.

For Freeman was born in Texas to evangelical missionary parents and moved at 13 with his family to Eswatini in southern Africa. A life-changing shift that became the beginning of his songwriting.

His religious upbringing has since left a distinct mark on his music, exploring, among other things, his relationship with religion, fleeting friendships and a search for belonging in a digital world.

In 2026, he has taken the country road with shows at, among others, Luck Reunion and Newport Folk Festival. He has even scored support jobs for Mumford & Sons and Foxwarren and played sold-out headliner gigs in both the US and Europe.

After a year in which “If You Know Me” put his name on the country map in earnest, he's now ready for the next chapter - with new music on the way and a concert at VEGA on February 18, 2027.
