These two progressive documentaries using psychodrama (a form of psychotherapy in which patients act out events from their past) show the psychological and sociological approach he brought to his filmmaking and his view that TV can be a tool for change.
In the Company of Men, Greaves addresses the life of long-term unemployed Black workers. Labourers and laid-off factory workers conduct role-playing workshops with white factory owners, including some who had dismissed them from their roles; sparking tense and honest discussions.
Nearly two decades later, The Deep North revisits this approach of role reversal in New York. In a series of workshops, a diverse set of attendees share and interrogate their beliefs on the different ethnic groups making up New York, unearthing deeply held prejudices, and creating space for dialogue and change.
