Iconic desert blues group marks 20th anniversary

About the event

Iconic band Imarhan have wowed audiences worldwide with their soulful, groovy and hypnotic take on the guitar anthems of the Tuareg people. This year they mark their 20th anniversary with the new critically acclaimed album “ESSAM” (City Slang, 2016)”, which shows new avenues for the tradition. Imarhan played an excellent and completely sold out concert at ALICE in 2022, so we look forward to presenting them again when they give concert in October.

Imarhan, who have their home in Tamanrasset in southern Algeria, where they have also built their own studio, join names like Tinariwen and Mdou Moctar beautifully to the ranks of orchestras that, rooted in the nomadic Tuareg culture, have captivated the rest of the world with hypnotic and electric guitar anthems. However, Imarhan has taken the music of the Tuareg people in a more urban and groovy direction, mixing inspiration from soul, rock and Algeria's raï music with the folksy roots and hypnotic jams. The music reflects both the spiritual roots of the Tuareg tribe in northern Mali and a modern everyday life in southern Algeria, where the members have grown up.

Time and again, Imarhan has wowed audiences with their well sound and hypnotic live concerts, and released albums that have been praised in The Guardian, among others. This year, Imarhan marks its 20th anniversary with the release of their fourth album “ESSAM” (City Slang, 2016), which shows new avenues for the Tuareg blues and opens up a more modern, open and experimental expression. The album is followed by a major tour, which fortunately also brings the amazing band to Copenhagen, where ALICE has the pleasure of presenting them once again.
