The Municipal Public Library in Lublin, the Institute of Cultural Sciences UMCS, the Lublin Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts and the Association of Art Historians invite you to a lecture by Dr. Marcin Pastwa entitled “In medias res — Cy Twombly again.” as part of the 18th edition of open lectures on art history 2026/2027 under the common title “On the Affinity of Arts. From synesthesia to intermediality.”
14 October 2026, 5.30 p.m. - Branch no. 2 MBP, ul. Peowiakow 12
Last year marked the 30th anniversary of the opening of the “author's” gallery of works by Cy Twombly (1928 — 2011) from the Menill Collection in Huston. The works collected there constitute a unique set permanently exhibited in a building designed by Renzo Piano according to sketches by Twombly himself. There you can find both sculptures from the 1950s and huge paintings from the last stage of his life. Twombly's idiosyncratic style is largely the result of a reflection on the mediational function of art, and the presentation itself opens up transitions between rigidly separated fields of creativity, redefining the relationships between genres and thereby revealing the blurring of the boundaries of art. Twombly, questioning traditional distinctions in his artistic practice, discovers the transmedia potential of art and the lecture will be an opportunity to recall some of the non-obvious aspects of his work.
