The year 1945, the island of Jersey, just after the war. Grace (Nicole Kidman) waits for her husband, who has not returned from the front, and alone raises two children with a rare disease: sunlight can kill them. In a large, fog-shrouded house, its rules apply. The curtains are always drawn, and no door must be opened before the previous one has closed. When three new servants stand on the doorstep, and her daughter begins to talk about people no one sees except her, the world Grace has built begins to crack.

About the event

The year 1945, the island of Jersey, just after the war. Grace (Nicole Kidman) waits for her husband, who has not returned from the front, and alone raises two children with a rare disease: sunlight can kill them. In a large, fog-shrouded house, its rules apply. The curtains are always drawn, and no door must be opened before the previous one has closed. When three new servants stand on the doorstep, and her daughter begins to talk about people no one sees except her, the world Grace has built begins to crack.

The whole film is based on this role. Grace is stern, pious, and to the limit, yet increasingly vulnerable to something she can't name. Kidman plays it with coldness and tension, under which from the first scene one feels a growing panic. 2001 was a turning point for her: “Others” entered the screens in the same year as “Moulin Rouge!” , and Grace's role earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. A few minutes later, she won an Oscar for “The Hours.”

Amenábar himself wrote the script, directed the film and composed music for it. He drew on the tradition of “In the Ticks of Fear” by Henry James and “The Innocents” by Jack Clayton to show that the most effective horror is the one that does not raise its voice. The horror here comes from the silence, the flame of the candle and what is hidden behind the next door, and the darkness in the photographs of Javier Aguirresarobe is a full-fledged heroine. The film became a worldwide hit, won eight Goya Awards, including Best Film and Director, and is still considered one of the most important horror films of the 21st century.

For the 25th anniversary of its premiere, “Others” returns to theaters in a new 4K reconstruction approved by the director.
