Nakręcony w całości wewnątrz VRChat, Four Percent oddaje napięcie między dystansem a bliskością, stawiając pytanie o cielesność, realność doświadczenia i więź w coraz bardziej zapośredniczonym cyfrowo świecie.
Short Film Screening | International Festival of Art & Technology INTER:AKT
The films vary in form and tone: from VR experimentation, through animation and documentary, to a personal story. They all align with the thematic scope of this year’s edition of INTER:AKT, built around the core concepts of imagining, mediating, and belonging. How do we imagine intimacy and touch when bodies are absent? What happens to our relationships when screens, platforms, and algorithms stand between us? What happens to our dreams of success when they begin to shape them? Where do we look for a sense of belonging in a world where presence no longer guarantees a physical body?
PROGRAMME Four Percent, dir. Monika Masłoń, 13’ Can You Hear Me?, dir. Anastazja Naumenko, 15’ The Perpetual Tapestry, dir. Simone Hooymans, 10’ hello beautiful please follow back, dir. Amandine Thomas, 7’ +10k, dir. Gala Hernández López, 30’
ABOUT THE FILMS The screening opens with Four Percent, which explores the experience of meeting in virtual reality and the ever-shifting forms of human contact. Through intimate records of digital encounters, it examines the sense of presence in a world where physical bodies are absent, yet closeness feels real. It analyzes imagined touch – how the gestures of avatars, generated co-presence, and the proximity of someone’s voice fill the void left by a lack of physical contact. Shot entirely inside VRChat, Four Percent captures the tension between distance and proximity, posing questions about corporeality, the reality of experience, and human connection in an increasingly digitally-mediated world.
From virtual space, we move to a family Zoom conversation. In the animated documentary Can You Hear Me?, we observe the relationship between Nastia, who has lived abroad for many years, and her mother, whom she is teaching how to use online services. Their differing perceptions of technology serve as a springboard for revealing intergenerational conflicts and long-forgotten family narratives. Navigating complex social media interfaces reflects an equally challenging path toward communication. As the lessons progress, the two women learn a great deal about each other – but will the intimacy reclaimed via Zoom have a decisive impact on the future relationship between these two adult women?
The Perpetual Tapestry is an experimental animation about a collapsing, transforming world where everything is interconnected by threads of woven fabric. Set against an animated tapestry reminiscent of antique gobelins – at once grotesque and beautiful – the film depicts the struggle for life and its rebirth. The tapestry is continuously woven and mended by bees pulling and gathering threads.
In hello beautiful please follow back, the director recounts her grandmother's relationship with an online romance scammer. This personal story becomes the starting point for examining how and why we seek connection through the internet, as well as what we are willing to risk for it.
The screening concludes with Gala Hernández López’s +10k. In it, the director examines contemporary desires for instant success, promises of financial freedom, and the culture of continuous self-improvement. Through the story of a young man striving to earn a five-figure monthly income and become the "best version of himself," the film investigates how computational capitalism, social media, and cryptocurrencies shape new fantasies, identities, and digital utopias.
