WHEN CONSERVATION BECOMES EXILE — BATWA VOICES FROM BWINDI FOREST (20 min.)
The Batwa people of Uganda were evicted from their forest homeland in the name of gorilla conservation. IHAMBA shares their story of loss and resilience.
IHAMBA — meaning “forest” in the local Rukkadian language — is a documentary film tracing the enduring bond between the Batwa people and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda. When Bwindi was gazetted as a national park in the early 1990s, the Batwa were forcibly removed from the only home they had ever known. Děk,,, a. Co-created over two years with a Batwa Advisory Committee and local communities, IHAMBA weaves together voices from youth to elders across 10 Batwa settlements in the Kanungu District. The film puts an essential human face on conservation-driven displacement, a bears witness to Batwa resilience, memory, and their ongoing fight for justice.
