The two young girls Siss and Unn meet in fear and joy. Siss is already part of the herd in the small village, but when the orphan Unn comes to, something changes. A spark springs between them that is an understanding, longing and embarrassment -- and when they finally find each other, it triggers a solemn, unspoken promise between them.
It has to be those two forever. Never again will they have to be alone. They've found someone they can tell everything to. Someone who grabs them and takes care of the magic of life, all the big stuff, all the hard stuff.
Out on the frozen steel ice of the lake, where the waterfall tumbles down, stands the ice-castle with its enticing abyss of horror. There goes Unn, drawn by the urge to be hidden and to be entrapped by something stranger than any fairy tale. Inside the ice castle there is the cold of death and there she is bewildered by echoes, crying rooms and a big eye watching her. Blinded by the sea of light and a chill of death, she goes to. As spring comes with loud bangs and blows in the ice and the castle cracks, the waterfall comes and takes it all with it.
Norwegian author Tarjei Vesaas was the first Norwegian recipient of the Nordic Council's Literature Prize for 'Ice Castle' and has also written 'Birds', which we have played at REVOLVER in two totally sold out rounds in 2025.
