If you're wondering if you should go to a psychiatrist, then you probably should. Is it any wonder that famous comedians often suffer from depression? I find it rather surprising that not all people with depression become comedians. We have learned to lead people to attacks of laughter by telling about toxic loved ones and past traumas: we carefully calibrate jokes so as not to cross the line, after which laughter turns into pity. And then we practice this program for years: at school, at work, in bars and trains and in other people's beds.

Emilia Dluzewska

The play “How to Cry in Public Places”, inspired by Emilia Dłużewska's bestselling book, which is a modern adaptation of a literary work, is part of the trend of contemporary theatre productions that open a dialogue on mental health. The author, Emilia Dłużewska, gained fame thanks to her book “how to cry...”, published in early 2023. The book, considered one of the most entertaining and profound stories about the experience of depression, attracted the attention of readers from different age groups.

The show “how to cry in public”, is aimed at all those who want to understand the experiences associated with mental problems. It's a show that encourages conversation about emotions while offering a bold perspective on psychological difficulties. The creators of Mira Mańka, Kamila Janik and Beata Passini decided to take viewers into the world of the main character, a thirty-year-old woman balancing between extreme emotions — Depressive and Manic. This story tells about the search for meaning and order in a crumbling life and about the emancipation of mental illness and emotions that the woman was previously unaware of.

The creators decided to turn this story into a theatrical form, using a light tone of comedy, stand-up, create a dynamic and humorous atmosphere, to change the social perspective on mental illness. Laughter, distance and authenticity are important in confronting one's own psychological difficulties.

The show is an attempt to break down taboos around topics related to psychic experience, betting on open conversation and acceptance. The creators want to challenge the stereotypes associated with mental illness, while offering viewers a space to laugh and reflect.

Three women, Kamila, Beata and Mira, believe that this show can become a place where women can not only show emotions without shame, but also change the stereotypical image of female emotionality. “how to cry in public” is not only a theatrical performance, but also a chance for an open conversation about mental health, accessible to every viewer. The Osterwy Theatre cordially invites you to participate in this extraordinary journey through the world of emotions and experiences that concern us all.
