Jane Eyre

Young orphan Jane Eyre, after an unhappy childhood in a foster family, chooses to begin a new life and educates herself to become a teacher. In her quest for freedom and independence, she is hired as a private tutor on the Thornfield Hall estate, where her encounter with the enigmatic owner, Edward Rochester, becomes fateful. The seemingly uncaring couple falls in love, but Jane must realize that Edward is carrying a great sadness that threatens their happiness.

The author behind Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë, is the eldest of the three famous Brontë sisters, and her Gothic novel caused a great stir when it was published in 1847. Not least the gloomy atmosphere and the supernatural elements fascinated Victorian audiences of the time. And then they were also presented here with a lighter rebellious heroine with both strength, intelligence and courage, and thus a new and different portrait of a woman's longings and inner struggles.

The English choreographer Cathy Marston, who has made a strong mark in recent years as one of the ballet world's incisive storytellers, unfolds Jane's eventful life into a work that is at once an intense and dramatic chamber play and a grand, immersive action ballet.
