There is always a certain amount of unrest under the sunny guitar sound of Jawdropped. The quartet from Los Angeles combines melodic indie rock with the bittersweet alternative sound of the 90s and the raw directness of alt-country. Catchy choruses meet distorted guitars, while the lyrics tell of side jobs, empty promises and the attempt to build a life in music without dying from it. However, the band has only existed for two years. Singer Kyra Morling, singer and guitarist Roman Zangari, bassist Sean Edwards and drummer Cook Lee-Chobanian had previously played in various local projects, organized DIY tours and spent the night in punk houses. When Zangari pulled out a few previously unused songs for a house show and won Morling for the joint performance, it initially created a spontaneous line-up. With Sean Edwards and drummer Cook Lee-Chobanian, it finally formed Jawdropped.

The EP “Just Fantasy” released in 2025 is now followed by the debut album “Secret to Spare”. The ten songs were written on days off and weekends, while the band commuted between tours and various side jobs. Unlike the material from the EP, which largely existed before the band was founded, the album was developed together for the first time in the rehearsal room. Musically, Jawdropped quickly found a common language.

Her points of reference include the Lemonheads' unpolished country pop, Paul Westerberg and the distorted guitar melodies of Teenage Fanclub and Dinosaur Jr. However, the song itself remains decisive for the band: If a piece does not work with acoustic guitar and the voices of Morling and Zangari alone, it is also out of the question for the album. “Secret to Spare” was largely produced in-house and recorded live. The band was supported by Colin Knight, while Alex Farrar, who previously worked with Wednesday, MJ Lenderman and Hotline TNT, among others, took over the mix.

The result should remain as close as possible to what Jawdropped does on stage: four musicians in one room, without superfluous processing or subsequent smoothing. Lyrically, the band also focuses on their immediate environment. Many of the stories come from bars, from conversations with friends or from encounters with people who have come to Los Angeles to gain a foothold in art. The song “Split Lip” describes the contradictory reality of a young band: initial successes and growing attention on the one hand, financial uncertainty and open questions about the future on the other. In this way, “Secret to Spare” also becomes an album about Los Angeles itself — about a city whose brightness is always accompanied by melancholy, doubt and a darker side. Anyone who wants to see how the band brings this contradiction live on stage will have the opportunity to do so at an exclusive show in Berlin in October. See less
