“I cry, I cry just like you. Sometimes I bleed, I fight, I get tired. I have a fire in the back of my stomach. I hold the world. I will join you in the chorus” — Samora Pinderhughes ranks very high in the list of the most interesting contemporary jazz songwriters. Labor unions, mortgages, poverty, mental exhaustion and violence — these are not typical themes of jazz songs. His lyrics are sharp and uncompromising, but while hip-hop references are no stranger to him, there is no direct American street rage in them. The message is carefully crafted and fits into the great jazz tradition of social engagement — from Billie Holliday, to Nina Simone, to Esperanza Spalding. With a captivating timbre of voice and high musical culture, Pinderhughes invites listeners into his world, and upon entering shows them the real life. As the reviewer of “DownBeat” aptly put it, his music is “a delicacy with a steel core”.
