Yevgeny Onegin

In overwhelming and detailed pictures of nature, Barrie Kosky stages Tchaikovsky's melancholy soul drama about the hopes, longings and failures of four young people who must finally realize: Happiness was close to grasping! When the poet Lensky visits his fiancée Olga and brings along his mysterious friend Yevgeny Onegin, it happened to Olga's introverted sister Tatjana. But Onegin Hart rejects Tatjana. Years later, he meets her again — now it is she who does not want to answer his sudden plea of love...

With Yevgeny Onegin, Tchaikovsky achieved his breakthrough as an opera composer and at the same time made a unique contribution to modern musical theatre. Barrie Kosky's production features an opulent stage design that brings the poetry of the characters and their tragedy into the vastness of natural space. In Tchaikovsky's unforgettable music, Yevgeny Onegin appears as a “subtle psychogram of young people who are just experiencing for the first time what irreversible decisions are.” [BR KLASSIK]
