Dreamers' Circus Gives Exclusive Concert for Anniversary Viewing of Carl Th. Dreyer's Norwegian 'Glomdalsbruden'

About the event

This film, which Dreyer created for a Norwegian company, seems in passages almost improvisatory. A classic triangle drama set among Norwegian farmers turns into a Romeo and Juliet story focusing on proud families and the power of religion over love — with a certain national romantic twist. Dreyer is already working here with themes that were repeated in, among others, 'The Word'.

Tore Bråten takes over his paternal farm, which his father has run poorly. He wants it to become the granary it once was - as big as Glomgården on the other side of the river. Here, Ola Glomgården rules, who is a quarrelsome and steep man. He wants his beautiful daughter Berit married to Gjermund, the son of a rich farmer, despite the fact that Berit and Tore have grown fond of each other. However, Ola wants his way and orders lightening in the church, leading the priest behind the lights by saying that the lightening is done with the consent of the two young people. On the journey to Haugsett, where the wedding is to stand, Berit runs away and she moves in with Tore and his parents on the farm. She seeks reconciliation with her father, who refuses. But Berit does not give up...
