Why is current Jewish life barely visible on TikTok in Germany? While a diverse digital community has established itself in the USA under the hashtag and term JewTok, Jewish voices are significantly less present on German-language channels. What role do anti-Semitism, hate speech and a lack of protective mechanisms play? And what is needed so that Jewish perspectives are also visible, diverse and self-determined in the digital space?

While a diverse digital community has established itself in the USA under the hashtag and term JewTok, Jewish voices are significantly less present on German-language channels. ruth__lol is a meme artist and activist. With provocative memes — Never Again (joke) — her Instagram account under the pseudonym ruth__lol reaches over 23,000 followers. From a left-wing perspective, the Jewish activist comments on topics such as anti-Semitism, the culture of remembrance, racism, sexism, queer hostility and current politics. With humor, pop cultural references and deliberately pointed memes, she makes social grievances visible. Her work focuses on Jewish identity, self-determination and the critical examination of experiences of discrimination in the present day.

Niyousha Akbari is a political scientist as well as a presenter and online political education employee at the Anne Frank Educational Center. Her focus is on teaching political educational content to young target groups via social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. With innovative digital formats, it makes socio-political issues accessible at low thresholds and promotes democratic participation. She also advises and trains institutions and individuals in the strategic use of social media, in particular TikTok, for political education work.

Rosa Jellinek is a content creator (@rose_igeaussichten), activist, and political educator.
