JULIAN LAGE
Julian Lage has been consistently building his own musical language for three decades, combining
virtuoso technique with exceptional freedom of improvisation and constant curiosity
different traditions. Originally from California and now associated with New York, artist
Already as a child, he was hailed as an extraordinary talent. He has since issued
more than a dozen original albums, and his discography also includes numerous
recordings with leading figures of jazz and improvised music.
Throughout his career, Lage has worked with, among others, Gary Burton, John
Zorn and Charles Lloyd, and also created duet projects with Nels Cline,
Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch. His music draws from many variations
American tradition, but never stops in one place — more important
from stylistic boundaries are for him the conversation between musicians, spontaneity and
the ability to discover new directions in real time.
The latest album “Scenes from Above”, released on January 23, 2026, was made in
Collaboration with producer Joe Henry. This is the first full-length publication
Lage recorded with bassist Jorge Roeder, drummer Kenny
Wollesen and acclaimed keyboardist John Medeski. Nine compositions
were built around the idea of team dialogue - each of the musicians has in them
just as much space, and the songs develop organically, without
subordinating the whole to one person.
The material grew out of an intense period of composing at the end of 2024. Lage
at the time he created short sketches with specific musicians in mind and how they could
resonate with each other. He looked for inspiration in both blues and American music
folk music, as well as in the music of Susana Baki, old calypso recordings or works
Bartók Béli. The result is a subtle, open and attentive album in which
Virtuosity never overshadows mutual listening.
“Scenes from Above” shows Lage not only as a leader, but above all
as a partner in the team. Compositions such as “Opal”, “Talking Drum”, “Something
More” or extended “Night Shade” emphasize the character of the quartet: musicians
leave space for themselves, react to each other in real time and build
tension without excess. This balance between precision and freedom is one of the
the most recognizable elements of Julian Lage's work.
The artist is today recognized as one of the most important guitarists of his
generations. “The New Yorker” ranks him as a first-class improviser, and
subsequent projects confirm that his musical imagination remains the same
as wide as the technical possibilities. The Warsaw concert will be an opportunity to hear
this work in its most natural environment - live, in direct
Contact between musicians and audience.
