Duckling

An intimate performance on the themes of a classic fairy tale, in which all roles are played by one actress.

The fairy tale about the ugly duckling becomes the starting point for the story of the search for its place. The narrator is a clown thrown out of the circus. He took his entire story with him in his suitcases. In each of them there is a small world, conjured up before the eyes of the spectators by means of the theater of form and theater of the subject. The clown, when talking about the duckling, speaks at the same time about himself, but also about us - because who among us has not felt inadequate or inadequate? Didn't he dream of finding his place in the world?

Familiar fairytale motifs were reinterpreted in KACZĄTEK by representatives of the youngest generation of theatre makers. Thanks to this, the show speaks not only about the fact that each of us carries within us the potential for development and change, but also about the feeling that often accompanies children in collision with the world of adults: that they are misunderstood, inadequate, not as they should be. DUCKLINGS is a timeless story about growing up, and its universality also lies in the fact that everyone - including adults - can identify with a hero who does not fit into their environment. “The Ugly Duckling” by Hans Christian Andersen is a classic tale of rejection and loneliness. Young creators bring hope to her by talking about self-acceptance and asking viewers the question: do we really need to change in order to be liked? The creators of the play are students of Wrocław art universities: Academy of Theatre Arts (director and assistant director), Academy of Fine Arts (scenographers), Academy of Music (composer). The ensemble proposed a new interpretation of the classics also in the visual and sound layer: the aesthetics of the new circus and jazz music.Description of the performance in simple language Chamber performance based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen “The Ugly Duckling”. The show is a monodrama, which means that one actress plays in it. The show is about finding your own place in the world. The main character is a clown thrown out of the circus. The clown builds a temporary home for himself from the suitcases he travels with. He looks inside the suitcases and remembers his life. He thinks about what home, friendship, freedom is. There are no traditional dolls in the performance. The actress uses numerous props. It animates, that is, brings everyday objects, balloons and red balls to life. The scenery consists of old suitcases and trunks concealing various surprises. One of the suitcases is used for the shadow theater. Balloons fly out of another. Jazz music accompanying the events is also important.
