Leningrad, 1938 year. Fyodor Volkonogov is the captain of the security service and part of a system that takes away freedom and truth from people. When his own conscience speaks, Fyodor runs away. He abandons the camera he served, knowing that punishment awaits him for this decision. But he's not just trying to save himself. He begins to look for someone to forgive him. Wandering through the city, he returns to people harmed by the system of which he himself was a part. Each encounter forces him to confront his own guilt.
“CAPTAIN ESCAPES” is an anti-totalitarian parable about a man who tries to regain his conscience, although he cannot undo what he has done. A story about guilt, punishment, mercy and the possibility of redemption. The role of Fyodor is played by Yuri Borisov from “Anora”. The film was presented at the Main Competition of the 78th IFF in Venice. The scenery, costumes and lighting evoke Rembrandt's “Return of the Prodigal Son”. Warm reds emerge from the darkness, and in the center remains a guilty man who, of his own free will, seeks a path to mercy and forgiveness.
