DR Symphony Orchestra
It is easy to get carried away by the elegant and at the same time dramatic music of Camille Saint-Saëns — not least the composer's most breathtaking work, the Organ Symphony. With this work, Saint-Saëns set out to create a great symphony intended to reignite the French symphonic tradition. He succeeded — and the composer was immediately nicknamed “the French Beethoven”.
The organ symphony is often referred to as a Resurrection Symphony — an uplifting journey from darkness to light in which the orchestra revolves around the ominous Dies irae melody until interrupted by the thundering organ, which reinvents the theme in music bathed in light and hope.
Before intermission, the star cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason makes his debut with the DR Symphony Orchestra in a work that both Shostakovich and Rakhmaninov considered the finest cello concerto ever written: Saint-Saëns's Cello Concerto No 1, bursting with freshness and vitality but at the same time permeated with soulful melancholy.
Star stringer and Sonning winner Leonidas Kavakos returns to the orchestra -- but this time on the conductor's podium.

Two star performers unite in a celebration of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns's elegant and brightly coloured music. The organ of the concert hall is allowed to fizzle when Leonidas Kavakos conducts one of the most immersive symphonies in music history and the young Sheku Kanneh-Mason is the soloist in Saint-Saëns's Cello Concerto No 1.
