Kayeb — Mother of Rain

A participatory installation inspired by stars and the cycle of life — Kayeb is a powerful snake, the mother of rain, whose stories have been passed on by the Arukwayene people over generations. The appearance of their constellation in December marks the beginning of a new year and the rainy season. Water levels rise, fields are flooded, fish start spawning and a new cycle of life and renewal begins.

Inspired by this constellation, artist Keyla Palikur invites visitors to paint the stars and the figure of Kayeb together on a large sheet of black fabric. The resulting work of art is then hung up in the foyer and makes the connections between sky, water, land and the rhythms of life visible to all.
