Kazimierz Malewicz - How to paint nothing and change everything?

Tuesday, 26 January at 18:00 in Rzeszowskie Piwnice

Duration: 90 - 120 minutes

Dr. Paweł Batory will talk about Kazimierz Malewicz's work and his revolutionary approach to art, which forever changed the way of thinking about painting.

In 1915, Kazimierz Malewicz exhibited a painting that at first glance is nothing — a black square on a white background. And yet it was this gesture that turned out to be one of the most radical moments in the history of art, closing the era of representing the world and opening the door to painting a pure idea. During the lecture we will look at how the artist came to this borderline form and why it was considered an “icon of our time”. We will answer the questions: what exactly is Suprematism, what Malevich wanted to “paint” and what to discover, and how one painting managed to turn upside down the principles of painting that have been in force for centuries. We will also show how the echo of this experiment is still reflected today — in art, in design, and in the way we think about what an image can be in the first place.

Meet the host:

Paweł Batory - priest of the Rzeszów diocese, art historian, doctor of art sciences, director of the Diocesan Museum in Rzeszów and Diocesan Preserver of Monuments, lecturer in art history at the University of Rzeszów and the Higher Seminary, member of the Association of Art Historians, the Rajsze Association and the Polish Council of Christians and Jews. A popularizer of knowledge about art through numerous texts and occasional lectures. She is interested in visual arts, film and literature.

About the cycle:

This time we will take a closer look at the biographies and works of selected artists. We will try to look at their works through the prism of life, personality, experiences and times in which they created. We will talk about their inspirations, artistic choices, ambitions and controversies, as well as works that have permanently entered the history of art. We will be interested not only in the work itself, but also in the stories behind its creation and the impact that individuals have had on culture.

Meetings are dedicated to adults.
