About the event

The soon-to-be-84-year-old jazz legend Kenny Barron is coming to Louisiana to give a concert on Tuesday, November 3 with his trio. He is considered one of the greatest living jazz stars at a grand piano and is particularly known for his long-standing collaboration with saxophonist Stan Getz.

Kenny Barron plays with an astonishing virtuosity that has secured him no less than 14 Grammy nominations over the years. He is considered one of the last remaining Nestors from the pioneering golden age of jazz.

He is especially known for a harmonic depth and rhythmic vitality. Inscribed in the history of the world of jazz is not least his immensely beautiful live record People Time recorded in Jazzhus Montmartre in March 1991. Here he played duo with Stan Getz shortly before his death.

At tonight's concert, Barron presents hand-picked songs under the title Songbook. He revisits and revitalizes 13 of his own original compositions, which have now had lyrical facets added through evocative lyrics written by songwriter Janice Jarrett.

The repertoire ranges widely across everything from captivating bossanova, energetic samba and Afro-Cuban undertones to jazz ballads and swinging blues.

Cast besides Kenny Barron:

Ekep Nkwelle (vocals): Cameroonian-American singer. She is featured on Barron's Songbook album, where her luminous voice and personal interpretations lift the two pensive tracks “Illusion” and “Sonia Braga” in particular.

Russell Hall (bass): Has made a strong mark on the American jazz scene through collaborations with heavyweights such as Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter and Jon Batiste, among others. He brings a deep, rhythmic authority to the quartet.

Jonathan Barber (drums): Mastering everything from straight-ahead jazz to modern beats. Barber has toured and recorded music with some of jazz's biggest names, like Pat Metheny and Christian McBride.

Please note, tickets will be refunded only in case of event cancellation.
